Monument Valley - Totem Pole This panorama of Monument Valley, taken by Christopher Gjevre, features the tall slender formation known as Totem Pole, the heavily eroded remains of a butte. Monument Valley is located on the border of Utah and Arizona and is protected as a Navajo Tribal Park, by the Navajo Nation. The area was once covered completely in sandstone layers, which have been worn away over millions of years to reveal the stone formations, mesas and buttes we associate with Monument Valley today. Images of these formations epitomize the American Southwest and were first brought to the attention of the public by the film and tourist industry, with the release of John Ford's 1938 film, "Stagecoach," starring John Wayne.

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area - Glen Canyon Dam This panorama taken by James Blakeway spotlights the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and the Glen Canyon Dam, which is located near Page, Arizona. Established in 1972, the recreation area offers visitors over 1.3 million acres of lake, desert, and canyon country for solitude and exploration. Constructed between 1956 and 1966, the dam is the key unit of the Colorado River Storage Project and was built to improve delivery and allocation of river flow, provide water storage for years of drought, and generate hydroelectricity.

Capitol Reef National Park - The Castle This panorama, taken by James Blakeway, features a prominent landmark and popular attraction at Capitol Reef National Park known as The Castle. This craggy sandstone formation, pictured in the center of the photo, is one of many beautiful structures that define the Park's 243,921 acres and its unmatched geological diversity. A unique characteristic of this region is the nearly 100-mile-long warp in Earth's crust known as the Waterpocket Fold, a classic monocline. The fold formed over 40 million years ago when a major geologic event reactivated an ancient buried fault, creating one very steep side in an area of otherwise nearly horizontal layers.

Arches National Park - Broken Arch This panorama of Broken Arch at Arches National Park was taken by James Blakeway. The trail to Broken Arch is a mild trek though varied terrain, highlighted by colorful rock gardens. While the Park has a great concentration of these landforms, the hunt for arches in this fractured landscape is not as easy as it may seem. As recently as 1970, official literature stated that the Park contained "nearly 90 arches," which is less than .05 per cent of the current known total. Three decades of concentrated exploration by a group of dedicated, curious "arch-hunters" has established a scientific protocol for surveying the Park and has documented over 2,000 of its namesake features.
